This is an unlined masonry chimney. Any appliance. . . gas, wood or oil, that is connnected to an unlined chimney is a dangerous situation. The chimney will deteriorate to a point where the bricks can literally crumble and fall away. The Ahrens Chimney Technique will correct a problem like this, improve the structural integrity of the chimney and will allow zero clearance to the rafters and other framing members.

Masonry caps that have deteriorated and allow moisture and rain into the chimney structure will cause serious problems. Bricks can absorb water. When frozen, this water will expand and will pop the faces off the bricks. This is known as spalling. We sell and apply water repellent products that protect against water penetration and spalling.

This unlined masonry chimney was blown over by the wind. The cause of the deterioration was a gas furnace and water heater. Note the other significant damage to the roof and rafters. All this could have been avoided with a proper liner. We have certified chimney professionals on staff who can evaluate your chimney and prevent a costly situation like this from happening to you.

It is essential that necessary clearances to combustibles be maintained. Over time, the ignition temperature of this wood has been lowered to about 250 degrees F.
