Causes of Spalling Bricks
- Cracks – As bricks age, they tend to crack. Water gets into the crack and the crack continues to grow. As water gets into the crack, and you have the freezing and thawing effect in the winter, the crack then gets even bigger. Over time the brick starts to spall.
- Bricks are porous- They absorb water, also known as water ingress. The saturation of water breaks down the bricks. Spalling occurs as the bricks cannot absorb any more water.
- Improper installation or incorrect mortar- This doesn’t happen often. The misuse of incorrect mortar as well as improper installation can cause the spalling of bricks.
It is important to address spalling as it occurs. This may include replacing bricks. If left alone, the repair costs will escalate.
How to Repair Spalling Bricks
- Identifying the problem is your first step. Contact Chimney Specialists Inc. for an inspection. If we identify spalling bricks, we will work to correct the situation.
- The damaged bricks are identified and removed. This is done by chiseling away the mortar that has secured the brick in its place. It is important not to damage any of the surrounding bricks. Careful attention is given. A hammer and chisel are used to flake away the mortar around the spalling brick.
- Cleaning out the area where the brick was removed. Dust and debris will be removed to make a surface that a new brick can be placed.
- Choosing the proper brick to replace the old one is important. We will look for size, texture, and color. We will want to match the new bricks exactly to the old ones.
- The installation of the new brick is next. Careful attention is given to leveling the brick in its place. Mortar is installed around the opening where the brick was removed.
- Water repellent is used to complete the process once the mortar has dried. This repellent will protect the brick and mortar from further spalling.
