Chimney Inspection Types

expert level 1 chimney inspection in highland wiIf you’ve never operated a fireplace and chimney, you may not be fully clear on the different types of chimney inspections.  First-time fireplace users – and some who are a little more experienced – can benefit from understanding the three levels of fireplace and chimney inspection.  This is because, over the course of the life of a fireplace, you may need all three.

Level 1 Inspection

This inspection level involves a thorough but basic visual inspection of the fireplace and chimney.  Level 1 inspections are performed on systems that have encountered no “changes” since the last inspection.  Changes can include anything from replacing the fireplace to experiencing a chimney fire.  In other words, if there’s no reason to suspect that something could have altered the operation of the fireplace and chimney, a Level 1 inspection is appropriate.

During a Level 1 inspection, the technician will check out the readily accessible parts of the chimney’s interior and exterior including construction materials and all connections.  The tech also will inspect for obvious obstructions such as creosote buildup, leaves, twigs, bird nests and the like.

Level 2 Inspection

This inspection is performed when changes/alterations have been made to the system.  Along with the addition of a new fireplace or a chimney fire, changes can include using a new type of fuel, changes to the shape of the flue such as when a new liner has been installed, weather events that may have caused structural damage, and other alterations.  A Level 2 inspection also is common when the home is sold.

According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, Level 2 inspections include “a visual inspection by video scanning or other means in order to examine the internal surfaces and joints of all flue liners incorporated within the chimney.”  This inspection does not involve the opening of any doors, coverings or panels, and doesn’t require the use of demolition equipment for the inspection or refurbishing of any materials within the chimney or the adjacent building structure.

Level 3 Inspection

This is the most involved level of chimney inspection.  It is performed when specialized tools, equipment and skills are believed to be necessary to uncover a problem and remedy it.  In cases where there is known or suspected damage, a technician performing a Level 3 inspection may need to remove sections of the chimney or materials adjacent to it and then rebuild in a way that meets all safety codes and standards.

Essentially, Level 3 inspections look at the construction integrity of the overall fireplace/chimney system as well as the nearby building materials of the house.  Water damage, fire damage and age-related decomposition of building materials all can signal the need for a Level 3 inspection.
