Four Hidden Dangers That May Be Lurking in Your Chimney

dangers lurking in chimney - WI - IL - IA Chimney Sweep ServicesEnjoying the warmth of a cozy fireplace is a national pastime for many homeowners, especially during the holiday season. But unbeknownst to some homeowners, there may be hidden dangers lurking in the chimney that can put a damper on the enjoyment of your fireplace or heating stove.

Creosote

Creosote is a natural by-product of solid fuel combustion. But this sticky and tarry substance is highly flammable. While much of the creosote is expelled through the chimney, some of it sticks to the flue. It continues to accumulate every time the fireplace is ignited. If the chimney is not regularly cleaned, the high heat and even burning embers can spark a fire. In fact, excessive creosote in the chimney is the most common cause of a residential fire.

Pests and debris

Pests often find chimneys a comfortable place to take refuge during the cold winters. Damaged or missing chimney caps provide easy entry for pests and debris including leaves and branches. But once inside they become trapped and can obstruct the chimney making it difficult for toxic gases to escape. The soot, creosote and even carbon monoxide along with other fumes can blow back into your living space. Carbon monoxide is a toxic, odorless and colorless gas. Since it is virtually impossible to detect without a carbon monoxide detector, it is often called the silent killer.

Mold

Mold is a naturally occurring fungi in our environment and wherever there is moisture, mold can grow. The combination of moisture inside the flue with the warmth of the chimney can become a breeding ground for mold spores to grow. These tiny spores form a life of their own and multiply very quickly. The spores are then released into the air through the fireplace when you open the door. Some mold strains can cause health problems for individuals with allergies, asthma and other respiratory issues.

The flue contains the heat from the burning fireplace in the chimney providing a layer of protection for your home. But when the masonry flue becomes damaged due to excessive moisture, pests, debris and age, it can allow smoke and heat to travel throughout your home increasing the risk of fire. The interior bricks and mortar can also become softened by water leaks and eventually begin to crack and fall. A flue liner is a great way to protect the flue and provide an additional layer of insulation in the chimney, but they can become damaged too and may need to be repaired or replaced.
